Student Teaching

Rocky Mountain High School Placement Introduction

My first placement of the semester was at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, CO. I spent 8 weeks during the first quarter working with 3 different classes Advanced Drawing, Sculpture/Adv. Sculpture, and a 3D design class. I got to work with different levels 3D design being a beginning class and then the Advanced students who had at least taken 2 prior pre-requisite classes. In total I had about 100 students. I took over both the sculpture and 3D-Design classes. I have less experience with drawing but I would still be with the students everyday and by myself, I just did not do the lesson planing. Overall I had a great experience at Rocky. The students and staff were very welcoming to me. I was able to learn things from all the teachers in the art department. The students are really what made my experience though. I was very sad to leave them, and it was very sweet that those who i would not expect to really care about me leaving were some of the saddest to see me go. They were also some of the happiest to see me when I spent time subbing later in the year. It really showed me that even when students aren't outwardly appreciative, as a teacher making an effort still has more of an impact than we realize.
Benjamin Eaton Elementary School Placement Introduction

My second placement of the semester was at Benjamin Eaton Elementary School (BEES) in Eaton, CO. This is a K-5 rural elementary school of about 360 students and 18 classes. For the specials classes we had a 3 day rotation, so I would see all the students every 3 days. I took over all classes for majority of my 8 weeks here. The 5th graders had some projects they were already working on or planned so I worked around that. Most of my lesson were for clay but there were some other more 2D artworks and online portfolios as well. At BEES I also really felt apart of the community, I joined in on bus duty, staff meetings, committee meetings, and more. Again the students took the spotlight. I really found the grades I love working with and discovered projects that would be better suited for another grade. There were some class that would make my day every time i saw them. or a student who would greet me every morning walking in. My biggest takeaway was understanding how to create an art classroom for all students, including those that don't like art.
